The Festival Town

Mandy Reeson • 15 March 2024

In July 2019, Cheltenham officially branded itself as “The Festival Town”, a very apt tagline given that the town plays host to no less than 35 Festivals annually, several of which are renowned worldwide. In this blog we have singled out two, one that is just reaching its climax and one that is just on the horizon.

The Festival – The Gold Cup

As the sun rises over Cleeve Hill, the hill that overlooks Prestbury Park which was home to the first Cheltenham racecourse, anticipation reaches yet another high on this fourth day of the Cheltenham Races. With three days of heart-stopping action including the 100th Cheltenham winner for trainer Willie Mullins and notable victories for Rachel Blackmore, already behind us, racegoers and enthusiasts alike eagerly await another day of thrills, spills, and unforgettable moments. From nail-biting finishes to triumphant victories, day four promises to deliver a spectacle that will leave us on the edge of our seats. The feature race of the day and the Festival itself – The Gold Cup marks its 100th anniversary this year.

Cheltenham and The Festival are where dreams are made, broken, and reimaged for another year….

Cheltenham Jazz Festival – 1st – 6th May

Then for music lovers of the soulful rhythms and infectious melodies of jazz – it's time to start planning your next adventure! The renowned Jazz Festival is on the horizon, promising a 6 day long celebration of electrifying performances, and unforgettable experiences. This year’s notable highlights include Dionne Warwick, Courtney Pine, UB40, Jay Rayner, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Festival Director, Gregory Porter.

Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or simply looking to immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere there’s something for everyone. Personally, we love the informality of the Free Gigs and Street Performances in the “Around Town” programme, which offer unique and exciting experiences during this festival. Check out the performances on the stage in Montpellier Gardens moving onto the bustling streets, pubs, and clubs of Cheltenham, there's no shortage of opportunities to discover new talent, groove to the music, and soak up the energy of the festival. So, whether you're a die-hard jazz fan or simply looking to enjoy a day out with friends, Cheltenham's Jazz Festival promises six days of music, merriment, and memories that will linger long after the final notes have faded away. Get ready to jazz up your life – Cheltenham awaits!
