Neptune Apartments to welcome its final guests on 30th June

The owners of Neptune Apartments have decided that it is time for them to retire and so will be welcoming their final guests on Tuesday, 30 ^th June, 2026. The 12 luxury serviced apartments at 47- 49 The Promenade have been welcoming guests from around the world since February 2022.

Owner Jim Hawtin explained the reasoning behind the decision:

“We have thoroughly enjoyed the last four years, but have decided that it is the right time for us to retire. As a result, Neptune Apartments will be welcoming our final guests at the end of June. We want to thank all our guests for choosing Neptune Apartments. Many of them have returned many times, and we have come to know them very well. We would also like to thank our small team and suppliers who have helped us deliver an exceptional guest experience.

“Cheltenham is a fantastic, beautiful, vibrant town, and we have been honoured to be a small part of the town’s hospitality sector over the years. We have always tried to shine a light on the many reasons why the town is a great place to stay, whether that be for leisure or business”.

The Rum Bar – Planters Punch

Warm, welcoming and full of character, The Rum Bar is a must-visit for rum lovers. With an extensive rum selection and knowledgeable staff, it’s a great place to enjoy classic cocktails done properly. This bar which is on Prestbury Road also hoasts live music in its basement and has a New York vibe.

The Planters Punch is a standout choice here – rich, fruity and perfectly balanced. The Rum Bar is a relaxed spot that works just as well for a quiet drink as it does for catching up with friends.

Flight Club – Tankard 10 & Blush Hour

If you’re looking to combine cocktails with a bit of fun, Flight Club delivers. Like the Alchemist, it is in Cheltenham’s Brewery Quarter (so named as it was once the site of a Brewery). Known for its lively atmosphere and social darts experience, Flight Club is also ideal for groups and celebrations.

The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum

The Wilson Art Gallery first opened in 1899 as the town’s museum. It was later renamed in honour of Edward Wilson, the Cheltenham-born explorer, naturalist, and physician who joined Captain Scott’s ill-fated Antarctic expedition. His story and artefacts remain a central feature of the museum’s collection.

A visit to The Wilson is a journey through art, history, and discovery. The galleries showcase everything from fine art and decorative crafts to local heritage and international exhibitions. Highlights include the Arts and Crafts Movement collection (inspired by William Morris), rare artefacts from Wilson’s polar expeditions, and a dynamic programme of contemporary art.

Everyman Theatre

The Everyman Theatre can be found on Regent Street in Cheltenham’s town centre.

The Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham was built as The Opera House in 1891, designed by Frank Matcham, who also designed The Hippodrome, The London Coliseum and The London Palladium. After facing closure in 1959, it was saved by the public and became a key part of the community. The theatre, a Grade II listed building, was extensively restored in 2011 to its former glory.

Why should you go to The Everyman? Because it’s a beautiful venue and plays host to some great shows and acts. The theatre champions local talent, hosts national tours, and produces its own shows - including the much-loved annual pantomime. It also runs workshops, relaxed performances, and a community outreach programme, making sure the magic of theatre reaches every corner of the town.

Holst Victorian House

The Holst Victorian House, located on Clarence Road in Cheltenham, is the birthplace of renowned composer Gustav Holst, probably best known for The Planets (a seven movement orchestral suite). This lovingly preserved museum offers a glimpse into Victorian family life, with period rooms, original furnishings, and fascinating displays about Holst’s early years and musical legacy.

Visitors can see the very piano on which Holst composed, discover stories of Victorian Cheltenham, and gain a deeper appreciation of how the town helped shape one of Britain’s greatest composers. The house captures both the intimate domestic setting of the 19th century and the extraordinary creativity that emerged from it.

To complete the experience, a short walk will take you to Imperial Square, where you can admire the striking statue of Holst—an inspiring reminder of his place in Cheltenham’s proud cultural heritage.

Pittville Pump Room

The Pump Room stands as the grandest remaining spa building in Cheltenham, and is a Grade I listed Regency structure.

Built between 1825 and 1830, the Pump Room was designed by architect John Forbes as the centrepiece of Joseph Pitt’s ambitious "new town," Pittville - conceived to rival Cheltenham’s established spa attractions. The foundation stone was laid on 4 May 1825, and the venue officially opened on 20 July 1830 with celebration events including a public breakfast and ball. Pitt’s lavish vision, however, eventually led to financial ruin—he died bankrupt. In 1890, the Pump Room and surrounding park were transferred to Cheltenham Borough Council.

The Pump Room's striking façade features an Ionic colonnade and, above that, statues of Hygieia, Aesculapius, and Hippocrates - figures symbolising health and medicine.

Inside, the main hall, there is the original marble and scagliola pump, for the Cheltenham Spa Mineral Waters, although you can no longer drink the spa water. The grand ballroom on the ground floor opens to a gallery and dome above – making it ideal for music performances. Originally, upper floors contained a billiard room, library, and reading room—spaces now repurposed as meeting rooms and event spaces.

Today, the venue is managed by The Cheltenham Trust and is still very much in public use - hosting concerts, weddings, exhibitions, conferences, and more.

The Pump Room remains a vibrant cultural centre, used extensively during the Cheltenham Music Festival for orchestral, choral, and chamber music performances. Details of the Cheltenham Trust’s events, including at Pittville Pump Room, can be found on their website.

Pittville Pump Room is a 23 minute walk from Neptune Apartments. The Pump Room is not routinely open to the public unless there is an event on there.

Cheltenham Town Hall

Cheltenham Town Hall (shown at the top of this page) stands as one of the town’s most iconic cultural venues. Built in 1902, its grand architecture and elegant interiors make it a landmark of civic pride. The Town Hall was designed by Gloucester Architect Frederick William Waller, in the fashionable Baroque style of the time during the reign of Edward VII.

The building itself features a coved ceiling over the main ballroom hall, measuring 92 x 52ft. This central room, around which the rest of the building radiates, can seat 1,000 people.

Today, it’s far more than a historic building—it’s a vibrant stage for concerts, comedy, festivals, and community events. From the world-renowned Cheltenham Festivals to performances and exhibitions, the Town Hall continues to be a gathering place where culture, creativity, and community come together in the heart of the town. Cheltenham Lido

The word Lido means an outdoor pool. Cheltenham Lido , once known as Sandford Lido is one of Cheltenham’s most cherished and iconic cultural attractions. Opened in 1935, this beautifully preserved Grade II listed Art Deco landmark is more than just a 50-metre, heated open-air swimming pool - it’s a living piece of the town’s heritage.

Set within 4 acres of landscaped gardens near the River Chelt, with its distinctive architecture, bright blue waters, and space to relax, combining to make it a favourite spot for generations of locals and visitors alike.

Cheltenham Lido is an 18 minute walk from Neptune Apartments. Booking is advisable when the weather is good. Open Swimming is from 2.30pm – 6pm and costs £8 per adult.

Let us guide you through some of the highlights

Mention Cheltenham to anyone and the chances are they will mention the Festivals, the racing or its regency architecture. However, being situated as we are in the heart of Cheltenham, one thing that stands out is the abundance of green spaces in and around the town.

Here is our pick of Cheltenham's Green Spaces.

Sandford Park

The tiny River Chelt, which takes its name from the town, flows through Sandford Park. The park is most well know for its ornamental water features and fountains. Floral displays are set around Unwin’s Fountain, and clipped topiary features guard the entrances.

The park is perfect for a morning stroll or a relaxed spot to read. Sandford Park is one of seven parks in the town to have recently retained Green Flag Status, an international quality mark for green spaces.

Walking Time: Approximately 0.6 miles, just around 13 minutes’ walk from Neptune Apartments

Imperial Gardens

Located behind the Town Hall, these tranquil gardens feature flower-lined paths and flower beds featuring 25,000 bedding plants. The gardens have a historic charm, and are a quiet space to relax or enjoy a light snack outdoors. The garden’s historic iron railings are gradually being reinstated around the park.

Look out for the Holst Statue, which commemorates the fact that the composer was born in Cheltenham. Enjoy a drink in The Imperial Garden Bar, run by Cheltenham-based brewery Clavell & Hind.

Alongside one edge of the garden is the Quadrangle, which contains a coffee shop and bakery and three restaurants, including two of our recommended restaurants in Cheltenham , Sef’s Steakhouse and The Nook. Imperial Gardens also comes to life with a number of events. In June and July, there is Art in the Park, a popular annual display of local artists' work. Imperial Gardens also plays host to several of the town’s Festivals.

Walking Time: Only about a 4-minute walk from Neptune Apartments.

Montpellier Gardens

A graceful, leafy park with tennis courts, a vibrant bandstand (which features live concerts during the summer), a café, and a playground. The park has an imposing Tree Walk, which has at one end the statue of King William IV (a grade 2 listed statue). The park also features the Jubilee seat created by Stroud Sculptor David John, to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee.

Montpellier Gardens is also home to the Gardens Gallery an Elizabethan Proscenium style building which plays host to regular exhibitions by local artists.

A little-known historic fact about Montpellier Gardens is that it is where the first successful parachute descent in Britain took place. John Hampton jumped from a hot air balloon 6,000 feet in the air on 2 ^nd October 1838.

Walking Time: Just a 8 minute walk from Neptune Apartments.

Pittville Park

Cheltenham’s largest ornamental park and arguably the jewel in the crown of Cheltenham’s green spaces, featuring lakes, the historic Pump Room, beautifully landscaped trails, and two superb self-guided tree walks. As well as having a Green Flag Award, the Park also has the prestigious Green Heritage accreditation.

Pittville Park is divided in two by Evesham Road. The eastern side is most well-known, being overlooked by Pittville Pump Room and with a vast children’s play area, including sand and a water play area, plus several aviaries where you’ll find birds and bunnies. On this side of Pittville Park visitors can enjoy refreshments from a kiosk next to the playground and Central Cross Cafe.

The second section of the park is much larger, here you’ll find the larger ‘lower lake’, also known as the boating lake, where you can fish during fishing season and as the name suggests hire a boat. This park also includes two smaller children’s play areas, tennis courts, a pitch and putt golf course, a skate park and a BMX park.

Refreshments can be purchased on the western side of Pittville Park from The Boathouse Cafe.

Pittville Park also hosts a very popular Park Run every Saturday morning.

Walking Time: The distance is around 1 mile (about 20 minutes’ walk), or take the Stagecoach bus route D or E from Clarence Street for a 4 minute journey.

Cleeve Hill

The highest point in Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds, this dramatic hill offers breathtaking views across Cheltenham and Cheltenham Racecourse, the Malvern Hills, and even into Wales. The hill is rich in wildflowers, wildlife, and geological interest

Cleeve Hill is a popular destination for walkers, home to a Site of Special Scientific Interest with a unique limestone grassland habitat, and is part of the Cotswold Way trail.

Near to the summit of Cleeve Hill is Belas Knap a Neolithic long barrow, as well as an Iron Age hill fort on the Western escarpment.

Cleeve Hill is also home to Cleeve Hill Golf Club , where guests are welcome to play the 18 hole golf course that is ranked amongst the top 100 courses in the UK.

Cleeve Hill was also home to the first Cheltenham Racecourse between 1818 and 1840, although none of the remains are visible.

By way of a locals tip and if you are in need of refreshment, pay a visit to the Rising Sun which has tables in front of the pub with great views.

Walking Time: About 4.4 miles, and a 1 hour 45 minutes walk from Neptune Apartments. Alternatively, there is roadside parking just off the Winchcombe road, an 11 minute drive, or you can catch the W Stagecoach Bus to Winchcombe from the bus stop by Primark.

Leckhampton Hill

Last but by no means least in our list of Cheltenham’s Green Spaces is Leckhampton Hill. A scenic nature reserve featuring steep woodland paths, dramatic views, geological features like the “Devil’s Chimney,” and abundant wildlife.

It's a popular destination for outdoor activities like walking, hang gliding, and rock climbing and is part of the Cotswold Way trail.

Areas on Leckhampton Hill have been designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest due to the biological interest of the grassland and for its geological exposures. Historical features on the hill include a single rampart Iron Age hillfort and long barrow dating from 500 to 100 BC (although remains can be hard to spot when the grass is long). Old tramways criss-cross the hill from the days of limestone quarrying and the remains of kilns and quarries are still very much in evidence.

The hill supports a wealth of wildlife, including small mammals - foxes, stoats, badgers, and rabbits - and reptiles. Butterfly species include the Duke of Burgundy, Dark Green Fritillary, and Pearl Bordered Fritillary can be seen, and there is extensive birdlife, with buzzards and kestrels being regularly seen.

Walking Time: Around 2.9 miles and 1 hour 15 minutes walk. There are car parks on Daisy Bank Lane and Hartley Lane. You can catch the Pulhams Coaches L Service from the bus stop by Primark for a 13 minute journey to Leckhampton Hill.

Spotlight on one of Cheltenham's Cultural Gems

One of the great bonuses of a visit to Cheltenham and a stay at Neptune Apartments is the town’s many cultural attractions. In this blog Mandy Resson from Neptune Apartments shines a spotlight on The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum which is a 2 minute walk from the apartments.

The Wilson is not only a place not only for art, but also for honouring the life of Edward Adrian Wilson, a man whose love for nature led him from the Cotswolds to the ends of the Earth.

Edward Wilson was born in Cheltenham in 1872 in Montpellier Parade, just a 12 minute walk from Neptune Apartments – you can identify the house called Hillcrest thanks to the Civic Trust blue plague on the wall. Wilson was more than an explorer. He was a doctor, naturalist, and artist whose watercolours are as haunting as the journey that ended his life. From his early days sketching wildlife in Gloucestershire, through to his Antarctic expeditions with Captain Scott, Wilson’s work reveals a quiet respect for the natural world. Standing in the Wilson Room, at The Wilson Gallery today, surrounded by his studies of emperor penguins and glacial light, it’s easy to feel the fragility of it all, the cold, the courage, the stillness. It moved me more than I expected. There’s something incredibly human in his sketches.

What makes The Wilson so special is how it continues to evolve — a thriving place with space for creativity and community. Whilst I was there, I spent time viewing ‘Common Ground’ a thought-provoking exhibition curated by artist and folklorist Ben Edge. It explores our relationship with common land and the natural world, touching on themes of loss, rebellion, and belonging. Common Ground is on display until the 31st August 2025.

Equally uplifting was ‘Playground’, a playful, interactive exhibition that invites visitors to rediscover their inner child. Inspired by Cheltenham’s green spaces, it’s full of hands-on joy, from storytelling to games you’re encouraged to touch. Whether visiting alone or with family, a sense of delight can be found here. Playground is on display until 21st September 2025.

And when you have enjoyed the galleries, you have The Wilson Kitchen Café offering a great coffee or tea, locally sourced food, it’s the perfect pause — a space for reflection, or simply watching Cheltenham amble by.

Starting with The Everyman Theatre

The Everyman Theatre can be found on Regent Street in Cheltenham’s town centre, just a four minute walk from Neptune Apartments. The Everyman is in a fantastic location between some great restaurants, marvellous coffee shops, and if you are coming to watch a matinee then do not forget the shopping.

Why should you go to The Everyman? Because it’s a beautiful venue, inclusive, accessible, and plays host to some great shows and acts. We are a family run business and nothing is more important to us than 'getting it right' for our guests. We do this by asking guests to complete a short survey using https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/which we review regularly. However,reviewing the surveys isn't enough, acting on them is what is important and this is what we do.

Here are some examples of the improvements we have made.

Being in the center of town has its benefits such as having some of the best shopping, restaurants, bars and coffee shops on your doorstep. It can also bring challenges such as unwanted noise, it's a fact and we took it on the chin, and installed secondary glazing at our windows and double glazed doors in our larger apartments, the result is quietly, noticeable.

We have added extra work desks for our longer staying guests who need to work from home.

Repurposed our boiler room making it a safe storage space for luggage.

Purchased hairdryers, dishwasher friendly drinking glasses, as our beautiful gold rimmed glasses need to be washed by hand!

Added kettles for our tea drinking guests as the hot water served by our Nespresso coffee maker wasn't hot enough for tea.

Added extra blankets for snuggling

Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter – there is always something to do, see and experience here in the Regency Town of Cheltenham.

Let me begin by telling you a little about some amazing things that are happening in the area.

Wychwood Festival - 31st April – 2nd May - Cheltenham Racecourse

This weekend, you can expect to be fully entertained with more than 100 acts including music from the world of indie, world, and folk, across four stages. Add to the mix comedy and over 100 workshops for all ages. Plus, great food and Wychwood Ales, I cannot wait! Yet another great Festival for all you fun-loving people.

Cheltenham Jazz Festival - 1st – 6th May Montpellier Gardens

We are eagerly awaiting this year’s Jazz Festival which brings such diverse talent to the town. From the worldwide known jazz stars in the Big Top stage in Montpellier Gardens to the Open, free events in pubs. cafes, and streets throughout town, for music lovers everywhere this is the place to be. First-release artists for this year include Jack Savoretti, Dee Dee Bridgewater and UB40.

Cheltenham Science Festival - 4th - 9th June - Various locations around Cheltenham.

This is such a great venue, just on the edge of Charlton Kings. This outside, inside space hosts a myriad of features, and activities for all to enjoy. Such as live music, Saturday Cinema Club, dance classes, quiz and comedy nights, crafts, and wellbeing sessions to name just a few.

New for 2024 are jazz sessions which will be taking place on the first Thursday of the month from March.

I always feel that I am on holiday when I visit this place, such a cool vibe, great Cider, and the best street food. A visit shouldn’t be missed.

In July 2019, Cheltenham officially branded itself as “The Festival Town”, a very apt tagline given that the town plays host to no less than 35 Festivals annually, several of which are renowned worldwide. In this blog we have singled out two, one that is just reaching its climax and one that is just on the horizon.
